Study Abroad

Extend your horizons. Broaden your mind. See the world differently.

We are part of a global network of exchange partners enabling you to spend time studying in another country during your degree or you can arrange a work placement with departmental approval. We have long-standing agreements with universities in countries around the world, and we offer you two options for study abroad: integrated or intercalated.

Integrated – study abroad included within your three year degree

Most university degrees that incorporate study abroad will add a year to your standard three year programme – but on three of our core programmes you can integrate study abroad into your three year degree. An integrated year allows you to replace all of year two of your programme with a year of study abroad. The grades gained at the partner institution transfer back to Warwick and are converted to become your second year Warwick marks. Students on BA Politics, BA Politics and International Studies, and BA Politics and Sociology are eligible for the North America Exchange.

Below is a list of example partners PAIS students have been sent to in the past. This list is illustrative of the types of options that may be available in future years. Please note places available are subject to change.

USA – University of California

Canada - University of Waterloo, Ontario; University of British Columbia, Vancouver; Queen’s University, Ontario; Western University, Ontario.

Intercalated – study abroad or work placement adding a year to your degree

This option will add one year to your degree programme. You can either study at one of our partner universities or set up an approved work placement.
The intercalated exchanges are available to students on the BA in Politics, BA Politics and International Studies, BA Politics, International Studies and Quantitative Methods and BA Politics and Sociology, as well as the joint degrees with subjects administered by other departments.

Students on our BA Politics, International Studies and Modern Languages degrees will spend a compulsory year of study or work in a country where their chosen language is spoken. Students on the BA Politics and International Studies with Chinese will spend a compulsory year of study in China.

Below is a list of example partners available to our students in 2018/19 for intercalated study. This list is illustrative of the types of options that may be available in future years. Please note places available are subject to change.

Europe – We have extensive partners in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. You can choose from among the finest universities in Europe in cities such as Paris, Madrid, Vienna, Berlin, Florence and Barcelona. Students also have the option of setting up a work placement in a European country with the approval of the department.

Japan – If you’re interested in Japan, you can apply for options such as Waseda University in Tokyo or Hokkaido University in the north of the country.

Australia – As part of Warwick’s alliance with Monash University, you can apply to spend an intercalated year studying in Melbourne. This is a university wide placement, open to all students here at Warwick. Half of the academic year can be spent at the Monash campus in Malaysia.

Hong Kong – We have full year intercalated exchanges with the University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Singapore – National University of Singapore (NUS); Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

Summer programmes

The university also provides opportunities to apply for international summer schools; for example, the Summer School at Renmin University in China has been attended by several PAIS students in the past. More information on applying for summer school opportunities through the university can be found on the International Office study abroad pages.
