New Initiatives in Philosophy of Mind, Metaphysics and Epistemology

In conjunction with the appointment of Bill Brewer as a professor in the Warwick Philosophy Department, we are launching a whole range of initiatives designed to support graduate study, and research activities generally, in the area of philosophy of mind, metaphysics and epistemology. What follow are the main developments, which we think makes Warwick a most attractive place for graduate work in this area.

  1. The appointment of two further permanent members of staff in philosophy of mind/metaphysics/epistemology: Dr. Stephen Butterfill and Dr. Matthew Soteriou.
  2. Underwriting of the AHRB applications of two incoming graduate students in mind, met and ep each year, so that, when we offer places, we can guarantee full funding and a fee waver by the University: if they don't get AHRB funding, we'll cover it (see the note on Prize Fellowships in the section on graduate fees and funding).
  3. A series of distinguished visitors over the next three years who will come to work in Warwick for 1-2 weeks, give a colloquium, a couple of graduate seminars and possibly the odd one-off graduate supervision. These are likely to include: John Campbell (Berkeley), Anil Gupta (Pitt), Jennifer Nagel (Toronto), Chris Peacocke (Columbia), Barry Stroud (Berkeley) and David Velleman (Michigan/NYU).
  4. A formal graduate exchange scheme in mind, met and ep, with Columbia University, New York.
  5. A Consciousness and Self-Consciousness Research Centre at Warwick University with significant further research and graduate activity and funding.
  6. An annual Research Centre graduate conference in philosophy of mind: this year keynote speakers were Chris Peacocke (Columbia) and Richard Moran (Harvard). See http://www.warwick.ac.uk/go/mindconf for details.
  7. A weekly joint faculty-graduate seminar in the area. See http://www.warwick.ac.uk/go/philosophyresearchseminar for details.
  8. Interdisciplinary seminars in connection with the AHRB interdisciplinary research project on causal understanding. See http://www.warwick.ac.uk/go/causalseminars for details.

Please do mention these new initiatives to any of your students who are thinking about graduate work in mind, met and ep, or, if you are such a student, think very seriously indeed about coming to Warwick: you'll have a great time.
