Practical Knowledge (PH9GO)

The module aims to: (a) provide students with a detailed understanding of Elizabeth Anscombe’s account of what she calls practical knowledge, its role in intentional action and its relation to practical reasoning; (b) to introduce them to central topics in current work on intentional agency and the epistemology of self-knowledge, including the relation between intention and belief (or knowledge), the nature of practical reasoning, and the role of causation in reason-giving explanations of actions, and (c) to enable them to engage critically both with Anscombe’s work and with current debates.
