Athena SWAN Survey 2022 - Students
Welcome to this survey for UG, PGT and PGR students in the Department of Sociology!
The department is putting together a submission for Athena Swan, a national scheme which fosters gender equality in universities. For our submission, we need to assess how the Department of Sociology is doing in terms of gender equality (i.e. what we are doing well, and what needs improvement).
That's why we are conducting this survey. It seeks to gather data on students' views about the challenges, achievements and culture of our department in relation to issues of inequality, and particularly gendered inequalities.
We would really appreciate it if you could have a go at answering the questions below. If there are any questions that you feel are not relevant to you, or you would prefer not to answer, this is fine: just move on to the next one. If you would rather talk about an issue in person than write about it, please tick the relevant box to say so (these can be found under each question). You do not need to complete the survey in one sitting - you can save your progress and resume the survey later.
All data will be kept completely anonymous unless you grant us permission to contact you for a follow-up interview. In this instance your contact details will be shared with the survey administrator only: Sara Bamdad. The findings of this survey will be used only in preparing the department's Athena Swan submission for 2022, and equality action plans.
Thank you very much for taking the time to complete this survey - it will make a real difference!
NOTE ON THE UNDERSTANDING OF GENDER IN THIS SURVEY
When referring to gender in this survey, we understand it in broad and inclusive terms, to include people who identify as women, men and non-binary. Therefore, the questions on gender inequalities refer to any inequalities that relate to gender, including e.g. inequalities between women and men, inequalities between cis and trans people, and inequalities between those who identify as non-binary and those who identify within the gender binary.
You don't need to cover in your answers all those forms of gender inequality; you are very welcome to focus on the ones which are most salient for you.

We also understand gender intersectionally and will consider how gender intersects with other axes of inequality. The survey asks questions about other axes of inequality, but if you wish to consider intersections with other inequalities in any of the other questions, you are very welcome to do so.
