Sociology of Gender (SO116-15)

What is the Sociology of Gender, and why does it matter? This module focuses on conceptualising gender and how it plays a role in our everyday lives.

Issues of gender will have impacted your life at some point or another. You may have seen something on TV and thought it was incredibly sexist or felt uncomfortable being assigned a "gendered role" whether you wanted it or not. This module aims to take a deeper look into what we mean by gender and how we can sociologically address and study gender.

This module will particularly focus on gender in contemporary society. Gender impacts our lives from what we learn at school all the way to when we watch the news - issues of gender arises in our politics and our language. We will first start by conceptualising gender - learning what it means and looking at why its important. We will also cover broader topics such as sex and gender, theorising gender and the idea of masculinity and femininity and how gender can interconnect with race and sexuality.
