Introduction to Social Analytics in Social Inequalities Research

You may have witnessed social inequalities around you or even experienced social inequalities yourself. Some are struggling to pay for their accommodation. Others may feel they must try twice as hard as other people to get a job. Inequalities are not always ‘natural’ or the result of individual preferences. For example, some may try twice as hard to get a job regardless of their intellectual ability and determination.

But is there a way of demonstrating inequality beyond subjective experience? Can we break down arguments surrounding social inequalities into measurable components? Being able to operationalise social inequalities and critically assess your methods will strengthen your understanding of the social world and consolidate your analytical skills.

This module brings together conceptual issues surrounding social inequalities and quantitative methodological applications to provide you with a basic introduction to quantitative methods and SPSS as well as further your understanding of social inequalities.
