This paper was presented on February 2, 2011 at a seminar hosted by the Centre for the Study of Women and Gender at the University of Warwick. This is the first paper using the Channel swimming data, and a great opportunity to try out a few ideas. The paper explores some of the pleasures of Channel swimming, but also identifies some of the social risks which stem from its relative excesses - what Ewald and Jiobu (1985) describe as "positive deviance".
