Jeremy Ryder
Lecturer in Criminology,
Flinders University, South Australia
Jeremy Ryder has been a lecturer in criminology at Flinders University since 2022. Prior to this position Jeremy completed his PhD in Criminology at Flinders University for which he partnered with the Department for Correctional Services to initiate an annual public exhibition program of art from the South Australian prison system modelled on the successful program developed by Koesler Arts in the UK. In 2011, Jeremy completed a volunteer placement at Koestler Arts helping to produce the exhibition at the Southbank Centre. Jeremy then successfully implemented a similar model in South Australia, initiating and producing an annual exhibition program of art from the South Australian adult prison system from 2012-2019. After the exhibition program was paused during COVID it returned in 2022 and is now produced by the Department for Correctional Services. The exhibition program creates opportunities for people in prison to communicate with the community through art, and to showcase artistic talent and strengths in order to challenge popular negative stereotypes.
Jeremy has been teaching law and criminology topics across different universities for over 10 years and has also worked as a policy and project officer with the Department for Correctional Services (DCS) to develop a creative industries policy and where he helped initiate and develop a number of creative projects between people in prison with artists and organisations beyond prison
