Workshop
Integrating micro-foundations of and political economy perspectives on green finance – towards a transdisciplinary understanding
Why?
Social science research on “green” finance is fragmented along disciplinary lines. This workshop seeks to initiate an integrative move across sociologically informed disciplines to enhance our understanding and judgement of green finance. As starting point for this, the workshop aims to collaboratively clarify the relationship between the micro-foundations of “green” financial practice on the one hand, and questions of the political economy and the systemic gestalt of “green” finance on the other hand.
How?
Unlike traditional academic workshops we want to pursue this collaborative clarification in formats prioritising discussion and deliberation over presentations. By facilitating focused dialogue and co-creation, we hope to enhance our understanding of green finance across and not only within disciplinary and other academic silos.
When?
10 September, 10:00 a.m. BST – 11 September, noon
Where?
Warwick Business School, The University of Warwick, Coventry, CV4 7AL

Who?
Invited participants have a track record of empirical research on various aspects and loci of “green” finance, have different academic backgrounds ranging from management studies to political economy, and are at different stages of their careers from PhD students to full professors. All participants share a deep interest in developing an empirically grounded understanding of the role of “green” finance in the context of an escalating ecological crisis.
The following participants have kindly agreed to provide opening remarks on the relationship between micro-sociological foundations of and political economy perspectives on “green” finance from the vantage points of their academic disciplines:
- Daniel Beunza, Bayes Business School – Economic Sociology
- Felicia Liu, University of York – Economic Geography
- Yuval Millo, Warwick Business School – Accounting
- Matthias Thiemann, Sciences Po – Political Economy
The workshop is hosted by the WBS Climate Finance Team as part of their ongoing research on the knowledge politics of “green” finance.
