(i) Understand the origins of rational and irrationality in financial decision makers, and financial markets.
(ii) Help improve their own financial decision-making, judgements and predictions, by providing an awareness of biases and pitfalls.
Provide a broader understanding of decision-making throughout the finance industry, including strategic and managerial decision-making.

IB9AN0 - Principles of Cognition
Many introductions to psychology and behavioural science provide a tour of different aspects of the mind. This module takes a completely different approach: focusing on general principles, that may apply to many aspects of thought and behaviour. We ask: are there 'scaling laws' that govern psychological and social phenomena? does the brain search for simplicity? is the brain a probabilistic calculating machine? and what principles govern social interactions, and the evolution of culture? These principles provide a toolkit for understanding new aspect of mind and behaviour.
IB9AZ0 - Fundamentals of Economic Behaviour
The module provides a comprehensive basic introduction to conventional microeconomics. It is intended for students who have little or no knowledge of economics before attending the module, but may also consolidate ideas for those with some prior knowledge. The topics covered in the module include; (i) demand and supply analysis, (ii) preferences, utility, and consumer choice, (iii) the theory of demand, (iv) production technologies, cost minimisation, and profit maximisation, (v) perfectly competitive markets, (vi) monopoly and monopsony, (vii) game theory, and (viii) risk and uncertainty.

IB9CS0/IB9CSB - Big Data Analytics
Technology is becoming ever more deeply interwoven into the fabric of society. The digital traces left behind by our interactions with this technology form extensive behavioural data sets, offering unprecedented potential for a better understanding of collective human behaviour.
This module outlines key principles and concepts in big data analytics in a computational social science context and covers a range of examples based on big data including detection of societal events, such as elections, riots, disease outbreaks, economic and financial instability, resource shortages, and responses to natural disasters.
The module aims to encourage students to see how digital traces of human activity can be used to anticipate real world events and provides awareness and understanding of collective human behaviour. It passes on knowledge of mining, processing, analysing, and visualising large data sets.
IM9030 - Complexity in the Social Sciences
This module will present an overview of some recent highlights of computational social science research and how it relates to our interactions with technology. Technology is becoming deeply interwoven into the fabric of society recording human behaviour which can be used for large scale experiments on complex social and economic systems. This session will focus on how publicly available data can be used to analyse and model socio-economic complexity. In particular, the focus will be on exploring the extent to which these new data resources can be exploited in order to anticipate and detect significant societal and economic events, such as political crises, humanitarian crises, mass violence, riots, mass migrations, disease outbreaks, economic instability, resource shortages, and responses to natural disasters
IB9090 - Improving Management Decision Making
This module will give students a specialist knowledge of the pitfalls and flaws in how individuals and management teams make decisions. It develops advanced skills in, and a critical understanding of, the techniques of decision analysis as well as a critical appreciation of the assumptions, implications, and limitations of decision analysis. Topics covered include: Decisions involving multiple objectives; Decisions involving uncertainty about the future; Pitfalls in individual decision making; Pitfalls in management team decision making; Alternative approaches to decision making under uncertainty: scenario planning and real options.
IB9AP0 - Behavioural Sciences for the Manager
The main objective of this module is to review current ideas on behavioral science, and show how they can be used to improve managerial thinking and decision-making in a wide range of circumstances. The module will incorporate a wide range of viewpoints from leading researchers and practitioners, who will:
- illustrate how basic principles of behavioural science and behavioural economics directly link to human behaviour
- introduce key principles that govern consumer choice, and outline how psychological principles have direct implications for marketing, advertising and communication
- help you understand the role played by chance in decision outcomes, and to recognise how we can be 'fooled by chance' and to avoid it
- help you recognise biases in quantitative judgment, including overconfidence
- understand when opportunities exist in markets and learn about mistakes and biases in strategic reasoning
- enable you to understand why people and organisations often make overly optimistic forecasts, and to learn how to overcome this tendency – when eliminating the tendency is in your own interest
- understand how digital traces of human activity can be used to anticipate real world events and provide awareness and understanding of collective human behaviour.

IB9CVB - Leading for Innovation
This module aims to develop a greater understanding of how to foster an innovative work environment. In this module the role of the leader will be examined as he/she facilitates innovative ventures by identifying and defining problems worth pursuing (where potential payoffs justify risks), creating a context that allows for multiple parties to work together in generating viable ideas (those with a chance of successful implementation) and managing the context of idea development and fielding – to ensure that viable ideas are likely to be adopted in the marketplace. This module also aims to understand how to develop leaders for innovation.
