Meet Milton Nkosi: BBC Reporter and Warwick in Africa Trustee

milton.jpgMilton Nkosi usually reports on wars, famines and disasters, so when Peter Burdin, Head of BBC Africa suggested that he made a documentary about maths teaching, he welcomed the opportunity.

Reporting news involves reporting on a deviation from the norm and as a consequence is often about challenging and negative situations. Our bureau is always keen to find a balance with stories which reflect the positive side of life. Potentially from what we knew of the programme, Warwick in Africa would be uplifting but it proved to be extraordinary in that everyone involved in it gained from it. That's rare.

Since broadcasting the documentary, the University and the BBC have received very positive feedback from alumni, friends and fellow reporters. Milton thinks he knows why.

The BBC's role is to provide an independent view but we're human too. This documentary had an amazingly positive impact not only on the people who are in it but on the people who made it. It left us all with a lump in our throats and made us feel so good. Just occasionally documentaries are real spirit lifters. Mission for Maths is certainly one of those."
