Warwick marks EUTOPIA Day with vibrant, student-led celebration

The event highlighted the breadth of EUTOPIALink opens in a new window activity at Warwick, from innovation challenges and international collaborations to student societies and summer schools, while creating space for conversation, curiosity and new connections.

Professor George Christou, Warwick’s Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Europe), opened the session, setting the tone for an engaging afternoon.

Stephen Soanes, International Partnerships Manager followed with an introduction to EUTOPIA, outlining how the alliance connects institutions and creates opportunities for students to study, collaborate and innovate internationally.

Students at the heart of EUTOPIA

A key theme of the event was student voice and experience. Student representatives Cyrine Mokrani and Danae Macleod shared insights into their roles within EUTOPIA, highlighting how students help shape the Alliance’s direction and how opportunities such as the Innovation ChallengeLink opens in a new window empower participants to address real-world issues with peers from across partner universities.

Innovation took centre stage as D’Nette Lewis introduced the EUTOPIA Innovation Challenge, including details of projects hosted at Warwick. Their session demonstrated how interdisciplinary teamwork and cross-campus collaboration are helping students develop skills and ideas with global impact. Student societies also brought their perspectives to the discussion. Pathways, partnerships and global connections

The programme continued with a spotlight on academic opportunities, including co-tutelleLink opens in a new window arrangements, with Ethan Dommett, PhD Student in Physics, outlining how joint doctoral supervision across institutions, opens new doors to research facilities, culture, language sand life experience. He also reflected on his own experience of learning French as part of his journey, emphasising the importance of language in building meaningful connections, engaging with new cultures, and fully embracing the international opportunities that EUTOPIA offers.

The theme of collaboration extended to Connected CommunitiesLink opens in a new window. Mélina Delmas introduced the EUTOPIA Connected Communities initiative, followed by student Nikita Nagda, who shared her experience of participating in a Global Connections Link opens in a new windowcross-campus project, highlighting the personal and professional benefits of engaging with peers from different cultural and academic backgrounds.

Further insights came from Lewis Beer, International Partnerships Officer, who provided an overview of the EUTOPIA Certificate of Internationalisation Link opens in a new window(EUCI), alongside a student perspective on taking part. Lewis explained how the EUCI supports reflection on international experience, to allow students and staff alike to take stock of their international learning and engagement.

Maria Fox, Head of Student MobilityLink opens in a new window, rounded off the session with an introduction to EUTOPIA Summer Schools, encouraging students to take advantage of immersive international learning experiences.

Building connections for the future

A Q&A session gave attendees the chance to explore opportunities in more depth, followed by a networking lunch with interactive taster sessions creating space for conversations and collaborations to continue. Adding a fun, hands-on element to the afternoon, the Warwick Entrepreneurship Society led a lively “Frankenstein Challenge”, inviting participants to work in teams to brand, design and develop a strategy for a new health-based start-up. The activity encouraged creativity and collaboration across disciplines and backgrounds, perfectly capturing the spirit of EUTOPIA, bringing people together to generate ideas, share perspectives and tackle challenges in innovative ways.

EUTOPIA Day at Warwick reflected the Alliance’s core ambition: to build a connected, inclusive and innovative European University. Events like this both celebrate what has already been achieved, and inspire more students and staff to get involved, building upon student-led activity on campus by connecting it to the global innovation, education and research opportunities offered through EUTOPIA.

With enthusiasm high and stories shared across disciplines and borders, Warwick’s EUTOPIA Day made one thing clear: the future of higher education is collaborative, global, and driven by its students.
