Warwick Africa Hub

Africa is undergoing a remarkable period of economic and social transformation, with higher education playing a key role. Through deepening our understanding of priorities and development needs of our partners, Warwick is building collaborations rooted in principles of equality and mutually beneficial engagement.

About The Hub

The Warwick Africa Hub focuses on advancing new research ideas unconstrained by disciplinary boundaries. Its ambition is for collaborations that extend beyond universities to include non-governmental organisations, international institutions, private research institutes and private sector bodies.

Governance Structure

Capacity building in Africa

Through our links with The Guild of European Research Intensive UniversitiesLink opens in a new window, Warwick works closely with the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA)Link opens in a new window and its member universities to establish sustainable research and education partnerships with universities and researchers in Africa. Our other networks and initiatives include:

African Visiting Research Fellow

We are supporting the development of the next-generation African research leaders. Research Fellows visit Warwick and establish connections with academics and departments with the aim of developing an application for an externally funded fellowship.

Warwick in Africa

A student volunteering and education programme that works with schools across Africa to support teachers to raise aspirations in their learners by providing the best possible education.

The Ashinaga AssociationLink opens in a new window

Our partnership with the Association brings the brightest minds from across Sub-Saharan Africa, who have been orphaned or grown up with a single parent, to study at the University.

The African Woman Playwrights Network

The Network is a research platform that takes the form of a virtual community of female creative practitioners living in Africa or from the African diaspora.

Visiting Professor/Associate Professor

Our fellowships create links with academics and other high-profile figures from Africa who can help us achieve our mission and enrich the academic life of the University for both staff and students.

Distinguished Africa Lecture

Building on her acclaimed book based on interviews with the man considered to have been apartheid’s chief assassin of anti-apartheid activists, Eugene de Kock, Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela probes the internal psychological journey that perpetrators of gross human rights crimes must undertake before they can reclaim a moral identity to show remorse.

Our impact in Africa

We have strong cross-cultural relationships with individuals and institutions across sub-Saharan Africa. Our new collaborations are driving global change and below are a few example case studies:

Visiting professor at Stellenbosch University

By seeking out the similarities and differences with other liberation movements Wahidin hopes her research will inform policy and practice around peacebuilding, restitution, and transitional justice to create an environment where sustainable peace can grow and become embedded in the fabric of society.
