Interview with Amber Liburd, Apprentice at the University Nursery
What was your main role as an apprentice?
I worked at the University Nursery where I looked after the children’s safety, made sure all their needs were met and generally kept them happy!
Why did you become an apprentice?
I wasn’t ready to go to university and wanted the opportunity to earn money while I learnt.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship at the University of Warwick?
It’s really nice and friendly and the nursery is a great environment in which to work. It’s also not too far from home.
What was the highlight of your apprenticeship?
Forming relationships with the children. It’s great when they recognise you and come to you.
Was there anything you didn't enjoy?
Initially the early start and the journey to work but I soon got used to it.
Tell us about your plans for the future...
I’ve completed my NVQ level 2 and am just starting my level 3. I may then consider a foundation degree.
What would you say to someone who was considering joining an apprenticeship scheme?
Go for it! You gain a lot of experience and it helps you plan your future career whilst earning.
Interview with Debbie Castle, Nursery Manager
How did you find your experience as line manager to an apprentice?
It does take some initial adjustments for the apprentice and the rest of the team as for many apprentices this is their first taste of working life, but there are many benefits too.
What are the benefits of having an apprentice within your team?
Lots. It’s really interesting to see the training they undertake as for some members of the team it’s been a while since they completed their initial training.
