Public Lecture: Law at Warwick in the 1970's

- Export as iCalendar
Location: Room M2, WBS Training Centre, Radcliffe House, University of Warwick

William Twining, Quain Professor of Jurisprudence Emeritus, UCL; Professor of Law, University of Warwick 1972-82.

Abstract: 'I joined the Law Faculty at Warwick on April 1st, 1972, almost four years after it started. However, since 1966 I had been involved in lengthy conversations with Geoffrey Wilson about English legal education, American Legal Realism, Law in Context and many related issues. In 1967 Wilson was appointed the Founding Professor of the Warwick Law School and it was his vision that guided the original undergraduate curriculum and the direction of the Law School in its early years. In this lecture I shall try to reconstruct this vision, how it related to other ideas such as American Legal Realism, law in context, cls, critical theory and socio-legal studies and how this vision was modified over time, raising questions about the extent to which a modern law school can have a coherent ethos. The lecture will be mainly about ideas, rather than events or personalities, but it may be punctuated by a few anecdotes'
