Life Sciences seminar by Dr Helge Dorfmueller
“From insights into the GAC biosynthesis pathway to a new generation of universal Group A Streptococcus vaccine candidates"
Helge Dorfmueller is a Sir Henry Dale Fellow in the Molecular Microbiology Department at the University of Dundee. His research group studies the virulence factor Group A carbohydrate (GAC), a peptidoglycan-anchored surface rhamnose polysaccharide that is essential for the human-exclusive pathogen Group A Streptococci (S. pyogenes).
Helge will present the latest insights into the GAC biosynthesis pathway, revealing the function of several novel drug targets, suitable for the development of new antimicrobial compounds targeting also related Streptococci. Furthermore, the laboratory has translated these fundamental insights to develop the first recombinant and universal Group A Streptococcus vaccine candidates.
