Sports Ball 2009

Saturday 20th June, 7pm-2am, The Big Top Marquee, Maths & Stats Field

The Students' Union annual Sports Ball is taking place on Saturday 20th June, in the Big Top Marquee located on the Maths and Stats Field. As always, the event is open to staff, students and alumni.

This is a black tie event featuring a three-course silver service meal, a live party band playing a selection of your favourite songs and a whole host of awards presented.

In association with Right to Play, Sports Ball 2009 will include two special guest speakers Rugby Union and League international Henry Paul and Olympic Gold medallist Tim Brabants.

Henry Paul is a rugby legend. Born in New Zealand, he has played internationally for New Zealand in Rugby League and for England in Rugby Union. His CV is almost without compare: with a career tally of more than 2,500 points over 15 years, a World Cup Final appearance and a cabinet that includes Grand Final, cup and league trophies (not to mention a Commonwealth Games Silver medal), Henry is an all time great of the game.

Tim Brabants is a record-breaking British sprint canoeist who has competed since the late 1990s. Competing in three Summer Olympics, he won three medals with one gold (2008: K-1 1000 m) and two bronzes (2000: K-1 1000 m, 2008: K-1 500 m). Although best-known as a sprinter, Brabants' first success as a senior international had in fact come in the marathon. He won a silver medal at the 1997 European Championships at Pavia, Italy. Brabants was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II in the 2009 New Years Honours List for his services to Canoeing.
