In this Division of Metabolic & Vascular Health and Division of Reproductive Medicine Joint Seminar Series, Chris McCabe, Professor of Molecular Endocrinology at the Univeristy of Birmingham will be presenting a talk on "Oncogenes in thyroid cancer.

Many of the oncogenic events in thyroid cancer are well known, and the pathways which govern thyroid cell proliferation have been exquisitely mapped out. However, existing knowledge does not fully explain the genetic complexity of thyroid cancer, or reveal whether tumours are likely to be benign, malignant or metastatic. One novel proto-oncogene with a growing repertoire of roles in endocrine neoplasia is PTTG1IP, a ubiquitous and highly conserved gene about which relatively little is known. Roles are now being defined for PTTG1IP in cell transformation, tumour progression and thyroid cancer treatment.
