Long Service Award profile: Mark Hewson

Name: Mark Hewson

Job title: IT Teaching Support Officer

Department: Engineering

Number of years at Warwick: 31

There’s no such thing as a typical day, but, in brief, my job involves...

Anything IT related… I originally started as an Electronics Technician in Engineering but switched to IT in 2004.

In my time at Warwick, the biggest change I’ve seen is...

The number of new buildings.

On campus I enjoy...

Cycling around the University grounds several times a week at lunchtime and visiting the various construction projects, and just to see in general what is going on (it’s good to get out of the office at lunchtime). I’m looking forward to visiting the new Teaching and Learning building.

I thoroughly enjoyed the awards evening!

If I could change one thing at the University, it would be...

Move it nearer to my home so I wouldn’t have to deal with the traffic problems.

Outside Warwick...

I’ve played bass in the Sharmanaires Big Band for the last 38 years, and enjoy collecting and listening to music - I have a very large collection and have collected every UK number 1 single. Music is my expertise in any quiz I take part in!

I’ve been a member of a social group for the last 37 years having served on various committee positions for most of that time, I’m a keen (but fair-weather) cyclist and member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and the Inland Waterways association. My hobbies include anything to do with canals, ten pin bowling and travel – I’m now something of a cruise expert having done 26 in the last 14 years.

I recently watched...

Citizen Khan at the Arts Centre – very funny.

I usually travel to campus by...

Travel by car, as public transport is just too impractical. The traffic getting in and out of Coventry is getting worse every year and has become extremely frustrating. I’ve cycled the 30-mile round trip a few times but it’s not a nice journey, particularly on the way home.

My favourite place on campus is...

Anywhere there is construction going on, as I find this fascinating!
