This December the Coull String Quartet (quartet-in-residence at the University of Warwick) are moving away from the traditional concert hall setting to present their imaginative and accomplished performances in the informal, relaxed surroundings of The Herbert Café.  The Quartet is very interested in working with venues like The Herbert to find fresh approaches to giving concerts in order to attract new audiences.  It is a common misconception that classical music is somehow elitist or too difficult to be enjoyable. However the increased number of new listeners downloading music following the BBC’s recent Bach and Beethoven marathons suggests that the interest in classical music does exist.  Therefore the real challenge for today’s classical musicians is to find ways to appeal to these new audiences.

This is the second concert the Coull Quartet has performed in The Herbert.  The first was very well received with feedback particularly focusing on the intimate and friendly atmosphere; ‘I would like to thank the Herbert Gallery and Café for putting on the most wonderful of concerts. The Coull Quartet played an intimate programme in a perfect setting and rewarded the audience with perfect playing and a wonderfully warm and welcoming feel’.

The Coull Quartet concert in collaboration with The Herbert on 5 December is designed to appeal to both classical music lovers and those new to the genre.  It will be a relaxed after-work event with the quartet performing ‘in-the-round’ in the Herbert Café.  The repertoire will be spirited and poignant works by Shostakovich and Beethoven and the Quartet will also be premiering ‘Distraction’, a piece composed especially for them by Coventry University Music student Ben Fogerty.
