'Poisonous air' emergency costing £20bn a year - expert comment

MPs have demanded an end to the UK's "poisonous air" in an unprecedented report from four Commons committees. The Environment, Health, Transport and Environmental Audit committees want a new Clean Air Act, and a clean air fund financed by the motor industry. They are also demanding a faster phase-out of petrol and diesel cars - currently set for 2040. The government said air pollution had improved significantly since 2010 but there was "more to do". Dr Theo Damoulas, says that accurate data will help decision makers introduce the correct policies.

"In order to design and evaluate policies that successfully address the risks and challenges posed by air pollution we need to fully understand and accurately characterise the process and its causes.

"Data science disciplines such as statistics, machine learning and adaptive sensing have a crucial role to play in revolutionising this field and addressing these challenges. The University of Warwick in partnership with the Greater London Authority, The Alan Turing Institute and The Lloyds Register Foundation have launched the Clean Air in London project to do exactly that."
