Network Disruption

Originally Published 15 October 2003

A network component at Gibbet Hill campus developed an unusual hardware fault at 8:10 this morning which caused another element of the network to fail. That element controls overall network integrity and as a result most locations on campus lost network service.

IT Services were instantly aware of the problem and used the management features which are a capability of the new network to track the problem down. The fault was found and isolated in about an hour, and network functionality began to be restored to the rest of campus, building by building, between 9:10 and 10:00. Normal network operation resumed at 10:00 for all campus areas apart from the those affected by the failed component. Systems which rely on networking such as printing, were systematically checked, and subsequently brought back on-line.

Telindus, our supplier, have now looked at this mornings' problem and believe they have identified both its root cause and a fix. This fix will be implemented during the course of this afternoon and should prevent a further recurrence.

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience this fault caused.
