Over 300 people gathered for the Open Studies Awards Ceremony on Saturday at the University when students received their awards from Professor Stuart Palmer, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warwick.

Although the ages of the students ranged from early 20s to late 60s they were all together with a common aim – to receive recognition for their achievements to date. This year the Centre for Lifelong Learning has awarded it’s students over 1000 achievement awards from Certificates to Diplomas, Part-time Degrees and, this year, Post-Graduate Certificates.

The Centre for Lifelong Learning is one of the biggest in the country and has forged links with a number of local colleges. Subjects range from Ecology and Conservation, Earth Science, Psychology, Philosophy, Counselling, Community Research and Archaeology through to Languages and Journalism. Some students received two awards, some were new to the programme whilst others returned to re-enrol on other programmes.

Mother of three, Gail Gurney enjoyed her foray into English Studies so much that she has decided to embark upon a part time degree in English and Cultural Studies.

Stephen Ison, a graduate of Warwick, is hoping his Certificate in Psychology will be very useful in his management role and intends to study the subject further.

Other students who received awards were Elizabeth Hall, Parvinder Bhonera and Bally Bhothal who celebrated the culmination of their Diploma in counselling and are all looking forward to putting their newly developed skills to good use.
