Stratford-Upon-Avon school shows savvy business acumen in national competition

base_08.jpgBusiness-savvy students from Stratford-Upon-Avon Grammar School eclipsed competition from seventeen other local teams to win the Coventry and Warwick heat of ICAEW’s national business and accounting competition, BASE on 20 March which was held at the University of Warwick.

Stratford-Upon-Avon Grammar School impressed the judges and will go on to represent the region at the national final which takes place at the Metropole Hotel in Birmingham in June. This was one of 46 heats attracting nearly 3,000 students around the country.

BASE links schools, students and employers to develop employability skills and provide an insight into what a career in accountancy, business and finance might be like. Assuming the role of ICAEW Chartered Accountants, the students had two hours to analyse a business situation, before presenting their ideas to a panel of top business professionals.

Tom Madden ICAEW Regional Director Midlands, said: “The eclipse in the morning and this wonderful contest in the afternoon, It will remain a memorable day. All the students were a credit to their schools. I would like to praise all those teachers, employers, mentors and judges who gave their time and made this event such a success.

“There is a real desire to help and encourage these students. This was also an invitation to those who are interested to embark on a very worthwhile career as an accountant and open up their future to a wealth of opportunity.”

The BASE competition was supported by local organisations including The University of Warwick, Warwick Business School, HBO Ltd, Grant Thornton, Dains, Murphy Salisbury, Deloitte, EY, Catalyst Corporate Finance, and PwC who provided professional mentors and judges.
