e-learning was a key aspect of the development of the University’s e-Strategy. Since then further consideration of the impact of e-learning has continued under the leadership of Professor Chris Clark (Chair of the e-learning Steering Group of the IT Policy Committee) and a detailed e-learning Strategy is now proposed.
Emphatically, throughout the Strategy document, we are reminded "the introduction of e-learning technologies should always be driven by pedagogical considerations, not by the demands of the technologies themselves." This is kept in mind, as the strategy continues to address "the need to plan for and implement effective ways in which new technology can enhance the quality and experience of on-campus learning". The strategy considers Some Principles and then goes on to make a series of proposals under such headings as Tools and Resources, Administration of Learning and Teaching, Infrastructure and Support for e-learning Developments.
At the recommendation of the Steering Committee, wide consultation on the e-learning strategy will take place over the next few months. Taking into account the outcome of this consultation, proposals for the development of priorities and recommendations for implementation of the e-learning Strategy will be drawn up for further consideration by the Steering Committee in the autumn term. Senate, who warmly welcomed the Strategy, agreed this approach on 19 June.
• The e-learning Strategy therefore will be disseminated widely over the summer. It will be available on www.insite.warwick.ac.uk shortly and this will be announced via email to members of staff.
• There will be the opportunity for individuals and groups of staff to comment on the content of the strategy document and consider next steps and priorities.
• In addition a series of road shows in the late summer will be announced, to explore the many aspects of e-learning with staff. At these staff will hear about a recent e-learning visioning exercise on-campus and be introduced to the web-based tools that are being developed by e-Lab, as well as participate in planning for e-learning developments in departments.
• In order to find out more from staff already engaged in e-learning activities, an on-line questionnaire will be launched in September.
• Early next session students will also be asked about their experience and expectations of e-learning.
The comments and suggestions made on how to build from the current e-learning Strategy document will be analysed by the e-learning Steering Group and reported back to the Steering Committee – the next steps will then be identified and staff can expect to contribute to the continuing development of this Strategy.
