Originally published 26 June 2002

The University of Warwick has been awarded £300,000 under the Government’s Higher Education Active Community Fund to help it encourage University staff and students to volunteer to assist Coventry and Warwickshire community projects and activities. University administrators will work with the newly established Warwick Volunteers Association to develop opportunities in which staff and students can assist the local community and will also encourage staff and students to take up those opportunities.

The funding will also be used to train and support the volunteers and cover travel expenses. The University already has around 300 staff and students who volunteer to help in community projects. This new scheme intends to double that number of staff and student volunteers by 2003/4.

The University of Warwick will also closely co-ordinate its work in this area with Coventry University which has also been awarded £292,000 under the HEFCE’s Higher Education Active Community Fund.
