The University of Warwick and Monash University Collaborate on Groundbreaking Research into Inclusivity in Multicultural Cricket Teams

The University of Warwick, in partnership with Monash University, is proud to unveil the findings from an insightful research project addressing inclusivity and cohesion in multicultural cricket teams.

This collaborative project, developed through the Monash Warwick Alliance and spearheaded by Dr Kieran File (The University of Warwick) and Dr Lucas Santos (Monash University), focuses on how multicultural cricket teams, particularly those involving South Asian migrant players, can foster greater inclusivity.

By examining the behaviours and interactions within these teams, the research provides a deeper understanding of how everyday actions can either foster belonging or perpetuate exclusion.

Dr Kieran File, Principal Investigator at The University of Warwick said, “Our research revealed that many challenges to inclusion in multicultural teams arise from every day, taken-for-granted actions and behaviours. These everyday actions and behaviours can unintentionally lead to exclusion, but when thoughtfully addressed and/or adjusted, they can foster a stronger sense of belonging.

“To help multicultural cricket teams tackle inclusion challenges, we’ve highlighted these everyday actions and behaviours, uncovering practical insights on building inclusive environments where everyone can have a chance to thrive.”

A special event to showcase Phase 1 of the research took place on Thursday 23 January, at Edgbaston Stadium.

Research Objectives and Context

The study seeks to address critical issues raised in the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket’s report, Holding up a Mirror to Cricket, which highlighted long-standing challenges for South Asian migrant players in the UK.

Key questions explored in the research include:

  • How can multicultural cricket teams achieve and sustain inclusivity and cohesion?

  • What role does communication and daily interaction practices play in shaping inclusive team dynamics?

Drawing on qualitative methodologies, including semi-structured interviews and discourse analysis, the researchers identified actionable strategies that can be implemented by players, coaches, administrators, and parents to build inclusive team environments.

Dr Lucas Santos, Principal Investigator at Monash University said, "Sport plays a vital role in fostering a sense of belonging and building thriving and strong communities. We are proud to launch this practical resource about inclusive multicultural cricket teams, developed through the Monash Warwick Alliance."

“This resource demonstrates how sports organisations and diverse stakeholders can contribute positively to establishing and sustaining inclusive sporting cultures that welcome individuals from all backgrounds."

The findings not only address micro-level team dynamics but also contribute to broader debates about community cohesion in regions with significant immigrant populations.

This project exemplifies the long-standing partnership between The University of Warwick and Monash University under the Monash Warwick Alliance, a global research collaboration established in 2012. The institutions have brought together experts in sport, communication, and community cohesion to explore this complex issue.

About the Monash Warwick Alliance
In 2012 Monash University and The University of Warwick embarked on a ground-breaking partnership, the Monash Warwick Alliance (MWA), a pioneering model for international collaboration woven into the very fabric of both institutions.

Founded on shared principles of academic excellence and social impact, both universities had risen to international prominence through world-class research, a commitment to providing an exceptional educational offering, and a dedication to addressing complex challenges. The Alliance emerged as a natural progression, harnessing and enhancing these combined strengths to forge a unique synergy.

The Alliance was established to promote and develop the excellent collaboration between researchers, educators, students, and professional staff, and harness our collective strengths to empower research and education activities.
