University of Warwick Named 'University of the Year' at Warwickshire Tennis WALTA Awards

The University of Warwick has been awarded ‘University of the Year’ at the Warwickshire Tennis WALTA Awards, in recognition of an outstanding year for its tennis programme.

This accolade celebrates the University’s exceptional creativity, teamwork, and leadership in fostering a thriving and inclusive tennis culture.

Warwick has also continued to offer a diverse and varied tennis programme that engages not only students and staff but also the wider local community.

Matthew Tew, Tennis Manager at the University of Warwick’s Tennis Centre said, “The University of Warwick has had a fabulous 12 months in relation to tennis. Following some fantastic work with the wider sports department and the tennis team, the University of Warwick is now an LTA Tier 2 University, which will also significantly expand the University’s tennis provision.

“The true strength of tennis at the University of Warwick is the drive, determination, and strength of all our stakeholders. From University sport staff, the team at the Tennis Centre, the student population or University tennis partner Inspire2Coach, everyone has the same ambition - to continue to make tennis at Warwick the best it can be in all aspects.”

This recognition followed a detailed application process highlighting a few of the key projects and programmes on offer, including:

  • ‘Rock Up and Play’ Sessions: Aimed at enhancing student interaction and promoting wellness, these sessions are free for University students and staff members, and have become a cornerstone of recreational tennis at Warwick.
  • Junior Performance Programme: The programme has experienced notable growth, providing a platform for young talent to thrive.
  • Student Tennis Pathway: This clear and structured pathway now supports players of all ages and abilities, ensuring everyone can find their entry point into tennis and access tailored opportunities.
  • Workforce Development Programme: Developed in partnership with Coach Central (local CDC provider), this initiative helps students and staff gain tennis coaching qualifications and access broader workforce opportunities to strengthen British tennis.

“The University of Warwick is a worthy winner of the Warwickshire Annual Lawn Tennis Association Award for University of the Year for 2024.

“This Award is a County and LTA Award and the University will go through to the LTA Regional Awards.
