The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has named Coventry the UK City of Culture in 2021. The award will raise the profile of our city and region and, in doing so, create a range of opportunities for research and collaboration at Warwick and Coventry universities. The Universities have made a commitment to support the City of Culture Trust, primarily through a coordinated programme of collaborative research projects, with Coventry University, with the Trust and the City Council, and with other organisations across the city and the region. Our activities need to cover the run up to 2021 and the legacy, all supported under the wider ten-year Cultural Strategy.
The winning bid focused on five areas of activity:
- Driving the economy
- Closing the gaps in participation and engagement
- Building bridges: diversity and equality
- Underpinning the health of the city
- Creating a sustainable legacy and pride of place
Members of the Sustainable Cities GRP can contribute a broad range of expertise to these areas of focus and we see particular opportunities for monitoring, evaluation, and place-based research.
