Ben McQuillan tells us about his role as Apprentice Technician Mechanical Engineer in the School of Engineering
What does your work involve?
Working with precision machine tools to fine tolerances requires maths skills such as trigonometry. I'm learning as much as I can across a wide range of mechanical workshop skills. Also, learning how to get on with different people and adapting to the whole working environment.
Why did you become an apprentice?
I completed my AS levels but decided I wanted more hands-on learning and an apprenticeship appealed.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship at Warwick?
The University is well established with a great reputation and lots of opportunities.
What's been the highlight of your apprenticeship?
Meeting and working with so many different people.
What are your future plans?
After the second year of my apprenticeship I then want to complete a HNC, hopefully gaining a permanent role at Warwick at the end!
What would you say to someone who was considering joining an apprenticeship?
Personally it’s been a very good experience. I’ve received lots of training and I now know the career I want to pursue. I would suggest they choose something they enjoy and are enthusiastic about.
