Create a Fail/Pass Type Scale

  1. From the course page, click ‘Grades’ in the left hand navigation drawer.

  1. From the drop-down menu, choose ‘View’ under ‘Scales’.

  1. Click ‘Add a new scale’ at the bottom of the page.

  1. Give the Scale a Name. In the Scale box, type the required values, ranging from negative to positive, separated by commas, for example “Fail, Pass” or “Not Achieved, Achieved”

  1. Click ‘Save changes’

  1. Go to the Moodle Assignment Settings and scroll down to ‘Grade’. Change ‘Type’ to ‘Scale’ and choose your scale from the ‘Scale’ drop-down menu.

  1. In the ‘Grade to pass’ box, type ‘2’. To explain, in this Fail/Pass Scale 0 = not attempted, 1 = Fail, 2 = Pass.

  1. When grading assignment, your scale will now be the grading method.

  1. In the gradebook, the student and tutor will see Pass in Green or Fail in Red.

  1. Also, using this method, if you have activity completion turned on and the assignment included as part of that, you can see quite easily an overview of which students have and haven’t passed.
