Consumer Protection Law Course

Applying Consumer Protection Law at Warwick

A Moodle course on Applying Consumer Protection Law at Warwick has been developed to support understanding of how consumer protection law affects universities and what changes need to be made to working practices.

This new course, developed in house, is strongly recommended for any member of staff, especially those advising applicants or students. It is also applicable to non-Warwick staff teaching Warwick students, including those in partner institutions; people who support our processes, such as overseas agents; and students employed as ambassadors, bloggers or those who use social media formally on behalf of the University or a department.

The University will review engagement with the Moodle course owing to the importance of all colleagues being briefed on their responsibilities. The course takes twenty to thirty minutes to complete, and a certificate of completion can be printed if the pass mark is reached. .

FAQs, below, have been developed to support learners and their managers. Please send any additional questions to cpl@warwick.ac.uk .

Why has this course been developed?

This course was developed on the recommendation of the University’s CMA Working Group with the aim of supporting staff in their understanding of how consumer protection law affects their role and what changes they might need to make to their working practices.

Is the course compulsory?

The course is recommended for any member of staff, notably all those involved with applicants or students. It is equally applicable to non-Warwick staff teaching Warwick students in partner institutions or as ad hoc lecturers. It can be accessed via the LDC on-line learning portal, which lists other key web based courses for staff.

Students employed as ambassadors, bloggers or who use social media formally on behalf of the University or a department should take the course to be apprised of their responsibilities.

Who can access the course?

The course is set to auto-enrol, meaning that any staff member or current student can access the course. Any department wishing to arrange access for someone who is neither a member or staff nor students should follow the instructions below.

How does someone external to the University access the course?

For staff in partner organisations, hourly-paid lecturers etc. an external partner (visitor) account would need to be set up as follows:

  • Go to: https://warwick.service-now.com/sp
  • Click on the link "Visitor, Wireless and External Account Requests" under 'Email, Storage and Account Management at the bottom of the page.
  • On the next page click on the link "Request an IT account for a visitor" and complete the form and CSV file.
  • In the CSV you can leave the Unique ID field blank and use "0" for the IT Override.
  • Once the visitor access is organised, email cpl at warwick dot ac dot uk, and the course administrator will enrol your visitor.

How is the course organised?

The course consists of the following:

  • Aims of the course (including a video introduction by the Vice-Chancellor)
  • Applying Consumer Protection Law at Warwick (interactive slides that cover the key issues of information provision, terms and conditions and complaint handling).
  • Learning points – an opportunity to note things you particularly want to remember and to take away
  • Certificate of completion
  • End of Course feedback
  • Glossary of Terms
  • Additional Resources, e.g. CMA Guidelines for Warwick colleagues working in Marketing, Consumer Protection Law Advice for Volunteers Working on Open Days.

How long will the course take?

Approximately 20 minutes.

How is my learning assessed?

By means of a ten part test which is mixture of true/false and multiple choice questions. There is a pass mark of 80% which needs to be achieved before the course completion certificate can be printed or feedback left.

How do I know if colleagues have passed the course?

The course certificate indicates that a colleague has passed the course. If you represent the respective Human Resources department and need to oversee the training of relatively large numbers of staff you may ask the course administrator to run reports for you on staff in your department who have taken the course test and achieved the pass mark of 80% or above, either in their entirety, or between certain dates. This is provided as an Excel spreadsheet and can be requested by sending an email to cpl at warwick dot ac dot uk. If you are not a Human Resources officer please ask your Head of Department to authorise the request.

Will the course content change?

It is unlikely that the course will change significantly as it is based on consumer protection law, but the resources attached to the course are dynamic, so colleagues are advised to check the resources periodically.

Where can I find the course?

The course uses Moodle and can be found here.

How do I leave a question/make a comment?

You can leave feedback at the end of the course. If you wish to ask a question or leave further comments please email cpl at warwick dot ac dot uk
