Information and guidance for staff on the 17-point marking scale

Please note that as of the 2017/18 academic year, the 17-point marking scale was replaced with the 20 point marking scale here.

On 2 July 2008 the Senate resolved that the University should introduce a new 17-point marking scale on undergraduate modules and a new unified Honours degree classification system. The new marking scale and degree classification rules applied to students who joined Warwick from autumn 2008 onwards, and are now almost exclusively in use across the University.

Further information regarding the rationale for introducing the new marking scale, together with guidance for staff, is included below.

  • Rationale for the introduction of the 17-point marking scale, including the paper considered by the Senate in July 2008
  • Guidance on using the 17-point marking scale, including when the scale should be used; the marking process; deducting penalties for late submission of assessed coursework; dealing with mixed student groups
