The below purposes and principles of module evaluation were approved at University Senate in June 2014.
- Module evaluation should be a comprehensive and systematic means of gathering student opinion on each module, enabling review and improvement.
- Regular module evaluation should ensure that:
• The module syllabus is relevant and up to date.
• The module template continues to accurately represent the module.
• The teaching, learning and assessment approach for the module continues to be effective.
• There is a formal opportunity for reflection and evaluation, which might lead to further developments.
• Feedback from those teaching the module, external examiners and students is promptly responded to.
- Module evaluation should be used to enhance the quality of the teaching and learning experience.
- Module evaluation should constitute a dialogue with the student body, providing an opportunity for students to be engaged in the enhancement of the University’s taught provision.
- Each module should be evaluated every time it is delivered.
- Departments are required to ensure that this occurs.
- Whilst end-of-module evaluation is the formal method of evaluation, mid-module reviews are encouraged.
- Where mid-point module evaluation is used, it should help to solve immediate problems. The outcomes of mid-point module evaluations should be communicated to the entire cohort immediately.
- The types of questions employed should encourage students to reflect on their own learning.
- The purpose of module evaluation should be communicated to students, potentially in induction packs and students should be informed of their responsibility to provide constructive feedback. This may be critical of the module but should not breach the Dignity to Work and Study Policy.
- Results of module evaluation will never be analysed in a way that could identify individual students from their responses.
- Summary results from quantitative questions from module evaluation surveys should be discussed at Departmental meetings and these results and proposed actions discussed with the relevant Student-Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC).
- Departments must respond to feedback with plans identifying any agreed actions, timescales for implementation and who is responsible for each action. Such feedback should be provided to students within three weeks’ of the commencement of the next term, where feedback is collected at the end of a term.
