Module content and teaching
Principal aims
To introduce students to the theory, knowledge and practice of both quantitative and qualitative research in the social sciences To enable students to grasp the principles underlying the design, doing and analysis of a range of quantitative and qualitative approaches To introduce students to the conflicting, paradigms in educational research To encourage students to identify the theoretical and methodological grounds which educational research is based upon To examine the ethical and political issues underlying social research To equip students with the skills and competencies to undertake action research in order to develop subject specific knowledge and pedagogical skills
Principal learning outcomes
• Identify theoretical and methodological grounds on which educational research is based • Analyse the relationship between research questions, method and methodology • Identify appropriate quantitative and qualitative research methods for particular research questions and settings in order to be able to undertake research • Critically analyse own wider professional practice practice in order to select an area for improvement which can be examined • Critically evaluate evidence from action research
