Module content and teaching
Module Aims: to allow students to develop and demonstrate their capacity to communicate scientific concepts through writing focused articles; to allow students to engage with a variety of academic writing strategies to describe scientific procedures, present results and write instructions; to provide an excellent learning environment in which students can discuss their written work and engage in peer review; to encourage students to think of writing as a process; to facilitate the development of a variety of critical thinking skills, transferable to a range of careers relating to the sciences; to enable the development of a range of key skills in communicating science, transferable to a range of career options.
Principal learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of: Subject Knowledge and Understanding: advanced understanding of writing as a process, ability to write effectively about science to a range of audiences, ability to write clearly about an original and complex chemical research project, ability to apply critical thinking to their own writing. Key Skills: ability to provide constructive feedback to peers in a professional manner, ability to engage in collaborative work, advanced ability to use sophisticated scientific diction while writing in a clear and concise manner, ability to use web-based research resources effectively and to contribute to the module’s online forum. Cognitive Skills: advanced ability to apply critical analysis to an argument; ability to think independently about critical questions; understanding of the components of an argument; advanced understanding of the variety of writing strategies in science. Subject Specific / Professional Skills: the complexities involved in scientific writing to any specified target audience, the intricacies of collaborative work, the protocol of providing constructive feedback to peers, the importance of academic writing to their science project.
