Principal aims

The purpose of the module is to help students develop their practical and creative skills in writing poetry and their critical skills in exploring the aims and processes involved in their work and that of others. It will also give students an understanding of poetry’s role in human culture today.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: work in forms including: the sonnet, villanelle, sestina, terza rima, ‘exploded’ forms such as the triple-sestina, prose poetry, shape poetry, concrete poetry and ‘public art’ poetry; work in accentual metre, accentual-syllabic metre, syllabic verse and unmetred (‘free’) verse; and a variety of rhyme-strategies including rhyme-royale, full rhyme, slant-rhyme, consonatal rhyme, assonantal rhyme and sight rhyme; appreciate the diversity of contemporary verse strategies, including Oulipo, cross-artfrom (‘hybrid’) poetries, open and closed field poetry, L-A-N-G-U-A-G-E poetry and performance poetry; demonstrate an understanding of the practice of imitation, and the spectrum of imitative strategies; demonstrate a strong practical understanding of their art and a critical understanding of their poetics with regard to their own poetry; demonstrate a realistic and practical knowledge of the marketplace for poetry, including smalm presses and magazines and electronic outlets as well as mainstream and specialist presses in the Anglophone world.
