Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The aims of this module are: 1) To develop students' awareness of disability, individual differences and inclusion as theoretical models and practical processes; 2) To understand the theoretical issues and dilemmas associated with defining special educational needs and disability; 3) To provide students with an awareness of how language develops, where speech, language and communication difficulties can occur, and how needs are identified in a classroom environment, including issues of language difference versus language difficulty. 4) To apply cognitive theories of reasoning to specific learning domains, and its typical developmental trajectory. 5) To ensure that students understand the theoretical background to both executive functions and attention, and their relevance to learning contexts. 6) To introduce students to issues related to definition, characteristics and learning requirements of children with: ASD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, specific language impairment, attention deficit difficulties and social and emotional needs. 7) To understand new policy developments regarding SEND Code of Practice: 0-25 years (DfE, DoH, 2014- Education, Health and Social Care); 8) To consider the interplay between disability, child outcomes and poverty in the UK and to examine how disadvantaged children might be supported.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the modules, students are expected to: 1) Understand and critique current areas of theory and policy development in SEN and Disability. 2) Appreciate the extent to which educating children is underpinned by psychological perspectives and theories of cognition. 3) Analyse psychological models of cognition and their relevance to children’s learning and school contexts. 4) Understand the interplay between language, communication and learning. 5) Engage critically with psychological research regarding child development and learning. 6) Understand and develop the requirements of a psychology –based enquiry to learning with an emphasis on quantitative research perspectives and tools. 7) Relate the development of psychological insights regarding learning processes to their own work (eg, schools, voluntary sector). 8) Compare and contrast practical experience with theory regarding cognition & the psychology of learning. 9) Demonstrate effectively the ability to analyse, critique and reflect on disability and difference, especially in the context of socio-economic disadvantage.
