Module content and teaching

Principal aims

1. To provide an introduction to core areas of the philosophy of education. 2. To critically engage with contemporary debates within the philosophy of education. 3. To read core philosophical thinkers and texts and discuss their relevance for key educational issues. 4. To demonstrate the significance of philosophy for understanding and analysing key topics in education. 5. For students to critically reflect on their own conceptual framework and the way this shapes their understanding of key topics in education. 6. To understand the nature and value of an interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary approach to educational topics.

Principal learning outcomes

1. To gain an advanced understanding of core areas within the philosophy of education. 2. To interpret the current state of debates within contemporary philosophy of education. 3. To critically appraise the significance of taking a philosophical approach to theorising about education. 4. To interpret the different theoretical and conceptual assumptions that underpin our own understandings of key topics in education 5. To critically evaluate interdisciplinary approaches to educational research. 6. To acquire advanced skills in conducting philosophical research in education.
