Module content and teaching

Principal aims

Research Methods is designed for people who have had no previous experience of carrying out research and will also extend their knowledge of the relevant methods and associated issues for those who already have some experience. The emphasis is on taking a qualitative approach, but with the opportunity to include more quantitative methods. Indeed, at the outset of the module the hard distinction that is sometimes drawn between quantitative and qualitative approaches is questioned. For some students the idea of conducting empirical research is daunting, especially for those whose time is limited. This has been borne in mind in the design and teaching of this module, and past students (most of them full-time teachers) tell us how professionally relevant, and personally stimulating, they have found it.
