Module content and teaching

Principal aims

In any situation we need to communicate. This module will help you to understand the processes that affect communication - the people involved, the language used, the context in which it takes place. We will critically examine different theoretical approaches, models and concepts associated with communication. This will help you to recognise different types of communication across cultures and their relationships with language choice and multilingualism. It will also allow you to analyse and describe processes involved in communication planning and management. You will learn how to relate theoretical models and concepts to authentic examples of different communication types.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to demonstrate in-depth understanding and knowledge of different theoretical approaches, models and concepts associated with communication and be able to analyse authentic data in the light of these theories to gain a deeper appreciation of the subtleties of language in context.
