Principal aims

To introduce the concepts of operations strategy and show how an operations strategy can contribute to the sustainable competitiveness of the business (or help the organisation fulfil its strategic objectives in not-for-profit enterprises).To show the linkages between operations strategy and the overall role of the operations function in the organisation.To examine each of the individual elements of an operations strategy, so that you become familiar with the language used for describing operations strategy, and the concepts and issues faced by most organisations. Through the use of case examples, to provide you with the opportunity to develop appropriate analytical skills. To provide an overall framework for developing and implementing operations strategies.

Principal learning outcomes

"Subject knowledge and understanding: Formulate operations strategy and reconcile market requirements and operations resources within firms; Understand the principles and methods used in the improvement strategies of product and service operations; Understand the role and formulation of capacity and process technology strategy; Understand the role of organisation and infrastructure in realising set operations strategy; Understand the strategy for operations of supply chains and networks, and international operations. Key Skills: Demonstrate problem solving skills developed through analysing business problems in case studies; Demonstrate oral communication skills developed through presentation of cases and their theoretical and practical implications. Demonstrate written communication skills developed through the individual assignment. Cognitive Skills: Analyse case studies or research results to propose potential business solutions as they related to operations strategy; Challenge the concepts and models presented on the course Subject-Specific/Professional Skills; Demonstrate an awareness of practical managerial issues in operations strategy, as well as some generic solutions; Apply relevant concepts and techniques in a variety of settings and for a range of products and services. "

Timetabled teaching activities

Total contact hours: 7.5 hours; Module duration (weeks): 10 months; Other activity: Distance learning plus 1 day intensive face-to-face teaching. Students are provided with comprehensive WBS-authored study materials and set texts. Throughout the module, students can undertake formative tasks which test their understanding. The seminar provides students with face-to-face teaching and opportunities to work on case studies in syndicate groups. Further tutor-led support is available online and through optional weekend seminars.
