Principal aims

"The objective of the Global Energy MBA course overall is for the participants to gain the cross-functional understanding of management practice expected of a leading MBA, combined with an understanding of issues faced by the energy industry. The industry operates within an increasingly complex political and regulatory framework. Historic issues of monopoly energy suppliers vs. liberalised markets are combined with global issues such as energy security climate change. The aim of this module is to provide the participants with an introduction to the purpose and processes of effective regulation and how governments and global institutions develop policy to define and revise regulatory frameworks. "

Principal learning outcomes

SUBJECT KNOWLDEGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Show increased knowledge & understanding of the purpose and process of regulation; in general and in relation to the global energy industry; Understand how policy and regulation can work (or fail to work) at various levels from specific business activities to global issues; Appreciate how policy-making and regulation impacts the activities of a manager both at the operational level and in terms of strategy & investment; Understand the role that policy and regulation play in addressing the current challenges faced by the global energy industry. COGNITIVE SKILLS: Demonstrate the ability to translate how one may respond to societal issues through creating standards and frameworks that one may act upon; Combine tangible, operational activities with the more fluid & subjective aims that can arise from policy objectives; Develop an understanding of the managerial skill that sees regulation as not just rules to be followed but a framework to achieve goals, including fair business performance; Appreciate the connection between business activity, management practices, regulatory frameworks that managers can deploy or influence. KEY SKILLS: Develop the ability to scale between functional detail, business activity, regulatory framework and societal context & to translate this into effective written work, oral communication and presentation skills; Develop and demonstrate group/team work in contributing their own experience while understanding the experience of others.
