Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module aims to develop the learner’s interest in, and knowledge and understanding of, a wide range of MS/OR techniques to support decision making in organisations. Students will learn the theoretical underpinnings of the main Operational Research techniques and the range of applications for which they are useful. They will gain practical experience in modelling and problem solving using Excel Solver, Precision Tree, HIVIEW and @Risk software.

Principal learning outcomes

Subject Knowledge and Understanding: Demonstrate knowledge of Operational Research techniques and effective problem solving and decision making skills.Key Skills: Demonstrate ability to create, evaluate and assess a range of options together with the capacity to apply ideas and knowledge to a range of organisational problem situations. Subject Specific/Professional Skills: Given a practical problem, a student should be able to:i) formulate a model; ii) select the most efficient method to tackle the problem;iii) use appropriate software to solve the model; iv) report on the findings using a range of media which are widely used in business.
