Module content and teaching
This module explores the management of the employment relations. Although the module is of clear vocational relevance for those seeking careers in Human Resource Management, the aim is not to teach a narrow prescriptive ‘how to do it’ approach. Rather the module seeks to develop an informed, critical understanding of how the management of human resources is undertaken, why and with what effect. The module will equip students to critically engage with the normative prescriptive literature which abounds in this area; to understand the nature of, and reasons for gaps between such prescription and actual practice in organisations. Part of this requires sensitivity to the national and international contexts within which management of human resources takes place. Aims for the module vary for the core and elective variants, and assessment differs to reflect this. Students taking the module as core are expected to demonstrate integrated cumulative knowledge of different managerial approaches to managing human resources, and techniques in exercising control, gaining consent and compliance of workers and attempting to win commitment.
Principal learning outcomes
Subject Knowledge and Understanding: Demonstrate a detailed understanding of different managerial approaches to managing human resources, and techniques in exercising control, gaining consent and compliance of workers and attempting to win commitment; Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of both the prescription and practice of how labour is recruited, trained, utilised, motivated, rewarded and disciplined and how performance is managed; Show advanced understanding of the importance of the national and international contexts within which management of human resources takes place. Key skills: Demonstrate advanced written and oral communication and presentation skills; Demonstrate ability to identify and utilise appropriate on-line and other resources to assist in mounting and developing arguments; Team working skills.Cognitive skills: Critically analyse, reflect on and develop an informed, critical understanding of how the management of human resources is undertaken, why and with what effect.Professional skills (of particular relevance to CIPD route students); Demonstrate awareness of the nature of research underpinning debates in the area of Managing Human resources; Critically apply relevant knowledge and understanding to practical HR issues and be able to guide other decision-makers in decisions with human resource implications.
