Principal aims
Simulation is one of the most commonly used operational research methods. Four simulation methods are generally employed within the business context: Monte Carlo, discrete-event, system dynamics and agent-based simulation. This course builds on the coverage of Monte Carlo simulation in the Techniques of Operational Research module by focusing first on discrete-event simulation, but with introductions to system dynamics and agent-based simulation. Students will learn the theoretical underpinnings of discrete-event simulation and the range of applications for which it is useful. They will gain practical experience in problem solving using commercial simulation software.
Principal learning outcomes
Subject Knowledge and Understanding: Understand the nature and application of discrete-event simulation and an understanding of the nature of system dynamics and agent-based simulation. Key Skills: Develop a working knowledge of a discreteevent simulation software package. Subject Specific/Professional Skills: Know how to develop and use a simulation for investigating a problem situation.
Timetabled teaching activities
Total contact hours: 24 hours. Lectures: 16. Labatory Sessions: 8. Module duration (weeks, if applicable): 8* 3hour sessions over 1 term. Other: Module taught in 2 x 2 day blocks.
