Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module explores narratives in Italian associated with the experience of migration from, within and into the Italian peninsula. The various directions of migration and the texts attached to them are read in the contexts both of immediate historical and social factors, such as colonialism, economic and industrial development, political and economic migration, and of broader issues relating to migration in a global context, such as cultural displacement, minority cultures and identities. On completing the module, the student will have a good knowledge of a number of non-canonical texts and of questions of their status as ‘Italian literature’, a sound understanding of issues surrounding Italy’s nationhood and cultural unity, and a subtle grasp of key questions in post-colonial and cultural studies.

Principal learning outcomes

A broad understanding of migratory movements related to unified Italy (late nineteenth century to present day), including outward migration (economic and colonial), internal migration, migration into Italy. Detailed understanding of texts representing migration and mobility in the Italian context, and an informed knowledge of key theoretical and methodological questions related to minority and migratory texts and cultures.

Timetabled teaching activities

One seminar of one and a half hours per week. Seminars on Tuesday afternoon at Birmingham and Thursday afternoon at Warwick.
