Module content and teaching
Principal aims
The module provides a fundamental understanding of biotechnological principles and applications. It lays the foundation for further in-depth studies of biological systems being, or with potential for, commercial exploitation.
Principal learning outcomes
(a) Subject knowledge and understanding A broad knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of biotechnology and the importance of microorganisms in the development, exploitation and commercialisation of biological processes; Recognise and analyse the problems associated with the development and use of biological systems in a commercial process; Recognise the underlying principles associated with the transition of processes from the laboratory to the industrial scale; The role of a multi-disciplinary approach to solving biotechnological problems; Have a thorough understanding of the importance of microbial metabolism and structural properties in the development of biotechnological processes; Recognise the importance of education, multidisciplinary interaction and research for the future development of the speciality. (b) Key Skills: Ability to undertake literature/data base searches to research and validate a strategy or hypothesis pertinent to the biotechnology / bioprocessing industries; Be aware of the issues involved in the exploitation of a biotechnological process and how to develop an application strategy which overcomes or minimises their impact; Demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues pertinent to biotechnology; (c) Cognitive skills; By the end of the module the student should be able to compare and critically evaluate a range of techniques and strategies used in the biotechnology industries; (d) Subject specific/professional skills. Ability to research and present scientific data effectively in both a written and oral format.
