Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of the biology and ecology of plant pathogens, pests and of weeds. To analyse the conflicting requirements of environmental and crop protection. To present the (sometimes conflicting) objectives and components of integrated crop protection measures. To demonstrate and evaluate a range of methods for controlling pests, diseases and weeds and the pros and cons for each option.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to:- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of the biology and ecology of plant pathogens, pests and weeds. Be able to analyse the conflicting requirements of environmental and crop protection. Critacally analyse the management strategies involved in planning integrated control and circumstances where integrated control is not a viable option. Evaluate a range of methods for controlling pests, diseases and weeds in different crops and crop environments (outdoor, protected, semi-protected). Communicate clearly a programme of integrated pest management for a particular crop
