Module content and teaching
This module covers the practical and clinical capabilities required of an orthodontic therapist. You will apply the taught module knowledge to the clinical environment within their workplace training practices.
Principal learning outcomes
On completion of the module, you should be able to Maintain clinical records, following best-practice standards; Demonstrate rigorous clinical reasoning and decision-making; Undertake clinical assessment demonstrating appropriate evaluation of evidence from, for example, history, examination and investigations, with an appropriate spread of suggestions in the differential diagnosis; Undertake risk assessment leading to an appropriate management plan, including consideration of risks to the patient and others; Investigate and refer taking appropriate account of the views of relatives, carers and any other relevant third parties; Undertake care planning, including appropriate arrangements made, recorded and communicated for follow up over the full period of a treatment programme; Communicate effectively (orally and in writing) with a wide range of audiences, including other health professionals, patients and carers; Demonstrate professional standards in all aspects of orthodontic therapeutic practice; Evaluate own practice through critical reflection on a range of performance evidence and identify priorities for ongoing professional development.

Study days are interspersed by periods of supervised clinical practice. These are timetabled over three semesters and you will maintain a logbook of clinical activity for all sessions.

You have to achieve a level of capability required to allow them to perform as orthodontic therapists, as defined by the General Dental Council
